ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. (American Psychiatric Association DSM-5)
ADHD affects children, adolescents, and adults. It is treated both with medication and behavioral management. Successful management of ADHD occurs with a clear understanding of symptoms, strengths, and weaknesses of each individual diagnosed, and compensatory skills. Understanding how ADHD looks at home versus school and how to respond versus react to the symptoms is a key part of counseling. ADHD affects the whole family and it is important to help the family navigate living with someone with ADHD.
Understanding your child's rights for accommodations in school is key to your child's academic success. Children's grades should be reflective of their academic ability, not their ability to focus. Education and understanding of your child's rights are part of the therapy process.
